Last week during a speech, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered soldiers to shoot female communist rebels in the vagina.

Duterte stated, “Tell the soldiers, ‘There’s a new order coming from the mayor: We will not kill you. We will just shoot you in the vagina.’”

He also went on and added that women would be “useless” without their vaginas.

His orders drew criticism from human rights organizations and women’s groups.

Carlos H. Conde of the Human Rights Watch stated, “It is just the latest in a series of misogynist, derogatory and demeaning statements he has made about women.”

Conde continued, “It encourages state forces to commit sexual violence during armed conflict, which is a violation of international humanitarian law.”

Congresswoman Emmi de Jesus, who is a part of the Gabriela Women’s Party, also blasted Duterte as a “dangerous macho-fascist.”

She added,“He has further presented himself as the epitome of misogyny and fascism rolled in one.”

However, Duterte’s spokesman, Harry Roque, defended the comments saying that remarks were a joke. Rosque stated,“I mean, that’s funny. Come on. Just laugh.”

Duterte is known to make misogynistic remarks about women. For example, in 2016, during his election campaign, when he was talking about the 1989 prison riot where an Australian missionary was killed and raped, he joked that he wished he had raped her.

Trump has recently boasted of the “great relationship” he has with Duterte during his trip to Manila.

Trump stated, “We’ve had a great relationship. This has been very successful. We have many meetings today with many other leaders. And the [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] conference has been handled beautifully by the President in the Philippines and your representatives.”
