On Tuesday, during his visit to the Miramar military base in San Diego, Trump brought up his idea of a military branch called the Space Force.

Trump stated, “Space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea.”

He continued, “We may even have a Space Force, develop another one, Space Force. We have the Air Force, we’ll have the Space Force.”

He explained that he brought up the term as a joke at first but he eventually thought it was a “great idea.”

He stated, “I was saying it the other day, because we’re doing a tremendous amount of work in space, I said ‘Maybe we need a new force, we’ll call it the Space Force.’ And I was not really serious, and then I said, ‘What a great idea. Maybe we’ll have to do that.’”

The White House has yet to respond to Trump’s comments about Space Force.

Surprisingly this is not the first time an idea for a military branch in space was proposed.

Last year, Reps. Mike Rogers, (R-Ala.) and Jim Cooper (D-Tenn) proposed the idea of a Space Corps, which would have been a division of the Air Force for space. However, it did not make it on the final national defense authorization bill.

This year, Rogers and Cooper brought up the idea of Space Corps again and they say they have Deputy Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan’s support. Rep Rogers truly believes that Space Corps would be created within 3-5 years.
