On Wednesday, on NBC’s Today, host Savannah Guthrie didn’t hold back when she was challenging House speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) over the GOP tax bill.
During the interview, Guthrie asked Ryan if he was “living in a fantasy world” to believe the bill would positively impact workers.
She started off the segment by expressing her skepticism about the bill leading to higher pay.
She quoted Michael Bloomberg (I), the former New York City mayor to drive her point. Bloomberg argued that “It’s pure fantasy to think that the tax bill will lead to significantly higher wages and growth.”
Guthrie then asked Ryan, “I’ll ask you plainly: Are you living in a fantasy world?”

Ryan responded by citing a National Association of Business Manufacturers survey.
Ryan stated, “Surveys would show the vast majority of businesses are going to do just what we say, reinvest in their workers, reinvest in their factories, pay people more money, higher wages.”
Early Wednesday, the tax bill was passed by the Senate with a 51 to 48 vote. The House approved it later in the day with a 227 to 203 vote.
