On Tuesday, during an event in Tempe, Arizona, Vice President Mike Pence praised former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Pence described Arpaio as a “tireless champion of … the rule of law.”
Pence, who was introducing Arpaio, stated that he was “honored” to have the former sheriff at the event. He continued and described Arpaio as, “A great friend of this president, a tireless champion of strong borders and the rule of law.” This was met with cheers from the crowd.
Pence’s comments come just a year after a federal judge convicted Arpaio in criminal court. This was because he refused to stop racially profiling Hispanic people for immigration checks at traffic stops. Trump pardoned Arpaio but the judge refused to vacate his conviction.
Arpaio is running to fill Jeff Flake’s Senate seat in the August 28th GOP primary.

However, Pence’s comment did not sit well with a lot of people, including Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI), Fox News political commentator Brit Hume and Morning Joe’s Joe Scarborough.

Joe Arpaio is an unlawful racist and it is enormously important that the Vice President of the United States just lavished praise on him.
— Brian Schatz (@brianschatz) May 2, 2018
Mike Pence is “honored” to have Joe Arpaio at his event? And he calls a bigoted criminal who tortured inmates a “strong champion of the rule of law”? Even Arizona Republicans know this man undermines the most basic of American values. https://t.co/RwcQtKk86S

A tireless champion of racism and the rule of police brutality.

Hey @VP Pence you just acknowledged a federally convicted felon … the VP of the United States is giving props to man that was convicted and awaiting sentencing when Trump pardoned him that doesn’t exonerate him he still had to admit he did the crime!

Mike “Mother” Pence praises Joe Arpaio yesterday. “Champion of a strong border & rule of law.” He is the criminal who was pardoned by Bigly.
DO NOT forget that this asshole will take over once Trump is ousted.

After saying that convicted felon Joe Arpaio was a champion for the rule of law, if you still don’t think that lying bigot @VP Mike Pence didn’t do all he could to lie, cover up and act as if he knew nothing pertaining to Mike Flynn, you are just plain lost. Manafort’s choice.

Mike Pence calls Joe Arpaio a "champion for the rule of law."
-Made a woman give birth in shackles
-Refused to investigate child sex crimes
-Favorably called his prisons, where temperatures reached 120 degrees, a "concentration camp"
-Routinely violated laws
— America Resurgent (@ProgressOutlook) May 2, 2018
Of course Mike Pence praised Joe Arpaio. Pence is every bit as radical. His enabling of an HIV outbreak due to extreme ideological stances puts him in the same class of monster.

Hey Mike Pence —
A tireless champion of the rule of law doesn’t run concentration camps, get convicted for criminal contempt of court, and then accept a pardon from a corrupt President.
Just sayin’. https://t.co/a47MBbEIMq

So convicted felon Joe Arpaio, who was jailed for contempt of court for refusing to obey court orders to stop racial discrimination, is a “champion of the rule of law?” Mr. Pence, you’re a racist, lying jackass! pic.twitter.com/OXzU7zuCDg

Anyone who thinks Joe Arpaio is a champion of the rule of law must not understand what those words mean.
