On Thursday, Senate Judiciary Democrats sent a letter to Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) asking to schedule public hearings for Jared Kushner and Donald Trump Jr. This is to explore the pair’s role in collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) led the effort to send a letter to Grassley. Blumenthal’s letter requested hearings and asked for subpoenas should Kushner and Jr. refuse to publicly testify.

“This is an essential step toward getting us the answers that we need to fulfill our important oversight responsibilities,” wrote the Senators.

The letter’s cosigners included Patrick Leahy (VT), Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), Dick Durbin (IL), Amy Klobuchar (MN), Kamala Harris (CA), Cory Booker (NJ), Christopher Coons (DE), and Mazie Hirono (HI).

Senators have been pressing for more answers since the nation discovered that Trump Jr. had met with a Russian lawyer who offered dirt on Hillary Clinton.

Jr. has previously met with the committee staffers in private and he called the meeting a waste of time.

“Committee members have long been led to believe that they would have the chance to question witnesses directly — to follow up on the many questions raised by the staff interviews and to ensure that witnesses testify publicly and under oath,” wrote the senators.

All of this follows ongoing partisan problems from within the committee. Recently, Grassley and Graham were rebuked by Democrats for asking the Justice Department to go after Christopher Steele, who is responsible for the famous Donald Trump Dossier.
