According to a report at the Washington Post, the Secret Service will be moving from their plush Trump Tower headquarters to a nearby trailer on the sidewalk. This comes after a dispute over the lease terms with Trump’s property managers.
A spokeswoman for Trump Tower confirmed the situation on Thursday.
“After much consideration, it was mutually determined that it would be more cost effective and logistically practical for the Secret Service to lease space elsewhere,” Amanda Miller wrote in an email to The Post.
Previously, the Secret Service housed emergency agents in the apartment just below Trump’s. Now, that distance will extend to more than 50 floors, which could interfere with the president’s security should he ever return.
“It’s a security deficiency that has to be resolved,” mentioned a former Secret Service official who spoke anonymously. “It’s like having the quarterback of the football game actually being located in a different stadium than where the game is being played.”
An important note is that Trump has not visited the property since his inauguration. His wife and son lived there for a few months into his tenure but have since moved to DC.
Regardless, the Secret Service still treats Trump Tower as Trump’s permanent residence and must maintain a full detail on or near the property in order to protect it.
