On Saturday, during a closed-door fundraiser, Trump praised China’s president for consolidating power. Trump says he’s interested in doing the same.
Some think Trump may have meant ‘we as a country’ could someday get rid of term limits. Others, including how I’m reading it, believe he means ‘we the Trump administration’ may do it someday. Either way, it’s not something most Americans want to hear.
Trump was talking about recent changes in China’s political system. The Communist Party of China has been making an effort to repeal term limits, which would allow Xi to serve indefinitely.
“Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, who will remain in power until 2022 and possibly beyond, the outlook for fundamental human rights, including freedoms of expression, assembly, association and religion, remains dire,” stated the humanitarian group.
“Is Hillary a happy person? Do you think she’s happy?” he said. “When she goes home at night, does she say, ‘What a great life?’ I don’t think so. You never know. I hope she’s happy,” stated Trump.

Besides President Xi, Trump has a long history of praising despots. He has continually praised the brutal Philippine leader, Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte has a long history of human rights abuses, including killing those involved with drugs. Trump also continues to praise Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Ergodan, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, and others.
Of course, if there is a heavy backlash from Trump’s ‘President for life’ remarks, we are likely to see Sarah Huckabee Sanders say he was ‘just kidding around.’ This is becoming a regular pattern when Trump says something that sparks a lot of criticism.
