More than a dozen ICE agents call for the elimination of their agency

There are at least 19 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents who have signed a letter that asks Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to eliminate the agency.

The letter was sent last week to Nielsen. In the letter, they talk about how Trump’s deportation policies prevent them from carrying out other duties. They argue that it limits them from investigating more serious crimes such as drug-trafficking, cyber crimes, and human trafficking.

The letter reads, “HSI’s investigations have been perceived as targeting undocumented aliens, instead of the transnational criminal organizations that facilitate cross border crimes impacting our communities and national security.”

The letter comes as calls to eliminate ICE have increased among Democrats and immigration-rights advocates.

Last week, Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) introduced a bill to eliminate the agency. Other Democrats who have called on ICE to be abolished are Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
