Man who brought down Nixon says Trump is ‘more treacherous’

Carl Bernstein, a Watergate journalist who helped bring Nixon down, believes that Trump’s attacks on the media are more treacherous than the attacks of Richard Nixon.

Bernstein wrote on Twitter:

Bernstein’s tweets seem to be a response to Trump calling the media “enemies of the people.” Trump’s notorious tweet comes after a crazy press conference that was held on Thursday which turned into an attack on the media.

Trump’s ‘enemies of the people’ tweet had people comparing him to Stalin and Mao Zedong who used that particular phrase about people before they died or simply “disappeared.”

Trump is not the first president in U.S. history to attack the media. It goes as far as Thomas Jefferson in 1807, who said: “Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle.”

Nixon was notorious for bashing the press. He would say that the reporting was “distorted” and “hysterical.” In December of 1972, Nixon privately told Henry Kissinger that the press was the “enemy.”

However, no president before Trump has gone as far as calling the media “enemies of the people,” in which Bernstein has repeatedly claimed that Trump’s paranoia, attacks on the press, and “factless madness,” are worse than Nixon’s.
