On Tuesday, during his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Joe Scarborough revealed he is leaving the Republican Party to become an independent.
Scarborough is a former Congressman who represented Florida’s first district from 1994-2001. He is now currently a co-host on Morning Joe with his fiancee Mika Brzezinski.
Colbert asked why other Republicans haven’t haven’t changed their minds about Trump like Scarborough did, to which he replied that their support is “inexplicable.” He then went on to say that the GOP has “betrayed its core values” long before Trump took office, referring to December 2015 when Trump as a candidate called for a ban on all Muslims coming into the country.
“I said on the air, it’s very simple, it’s black and white,” Scarborough continued. “I said I can never vote for anybody in my party that said they were going to ban people for the god they worshiped.” He revealed that he found Trump’s actions and words “disturbing” throughout the entire campaign.
“You didn’t have Republicans coming out and saying, I can never support Donald Trump because he’s racist!” Scarborough stated. “Time and time and time again, they turned the other way, and they’re doing the same thing now. It’s actually disgusting. And you have to ask yourself, what exactly is the Republican Party willing to do? How far are they willing to go? How much of this country and our values are they willing to sell out?”
“But aren’t you a Republican?” Colbert asked.
“Um, I am a Republican, but I’m not going to be a Republican anymore. I’ve got to become an Independent,” Scarborough replied which he received to a loud cheer.
Scarborough along with Brzezinski has been frequent critics of Trump since he took office on their show. Trump recently went after the two on Twitter, referring to them as “low I.Q. Crazy Mika” and “Psycho Joe.” Trump also went after Brzezinski for her looks saying that she was “bleeding badly from a face-lift.”
Last month, the couple published an op-ed on Washington Post about Trump titled “Donald Trump is not well.”
Below is the clip of that will be aired on tonight’s episode.
But be sure to tune in tonight to watch the whole interview.
