During an interview on Wednesday with The New York Times, Trump claimed that Japan’s First Lady Akie Abe doesn’t speak English.

He was referring to the G-20 dinner where he sat next to her. Trump stated, “she’s a terrific woman, but doesn’t speak English.”

When the interviewer asked, “Like, nothing, right? Like zero?”

Trump replied, “Like, not “hello.”

He also stated that this made it hard for him because it was an hour and 45-minute meal.

Trump continued, “There was one interpreter for Japanese, ’cause otherwise it would have been even tougher. But I enjoyed the evening with her, and she’s really a lovely woman, and I enjoyed — the whole thing was good.”

However, there is a video from 2014 that suggests that the first lady can speak English very well. In the clip, she is seen giving a keynote address where she is reading her prepared speech for about 15 minutes in English.
