Months after Republican Kevin Nicholson announced his run to unseat Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin, his own parents donated the legal maximum to the Democrat he’s running against.

Nicholson announced he would run against Baldwin back in July.

Each of Nicholson’s parents, Donna and Michael, donated $2,700 to Baldwin’s campaign in December 2017. This is the largest amount of money that can be given to a candidate from a private party.

It has been documented that over the years Nicholson’s mother has given thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates, including hundreds to Baldwin. However, this is the first contribution to Baldwin since their son announced his bid.

In a statement, Nicholson stated, “My parents have a different worldview than I do, and it is not surprising that they would support a candidate like Tammy Baldwin who shares their perspective.”

He continued, “I’m a conservative today not because I was born one, but because of the experience I earned as a Marine in combat, my experience as a husband and father, my choice to be a Christian, the schools I chose to attend and the decision to pursue the career that I have.”

He added, “Regardless of who may disagree with my life decisions, I would not trade these experiences for anything, and they will always guide my views as Wisconsin’s next U.S. Senator.”

He has faced questions regarding his political views in the past when he was serving as the president of the College Democrats of America. He has also been questioned for his speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2000.

However, in an interview with Politico, he revealed that he permanently changed parties after he deployed to Iraq in 2007, citing he was “livid” to Democrats’ opposition to the war.

In his interview with Politico, he stated, “I knew what we were doing there. We were stabilizing that country. We made incredible amounts of progress. And what I was hearing back home was a complete and absolute lie, as politicians were running around calling it a failure.”

One might point out to Nicholson that the invasion of Iraq actually destabilized the country. He wouldn’t have noticed because the US military troops obviously weren’t present before the invasion.
