Over the weekend, a Republican lawmaker in Idaho Falls, Bryan Zollinger, took to Facebook to share a conspiracy theory that suggests that the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia could have been staged by former President Barack Obama.
Zollinger linked an article written on a site called The American Thinker that claims that the Charlottesville rally was staged by Obama with the help of George Soros and the Virginia governor or the mayor of Charlottesville.
In the comments section, a commenter asked Zollinger, “Bryan, you have to know this is crazy, right?
To which Zollinger replied saying, “I’m not saying it is true but I am suggesting that it is completely plausible,” adding that “many protesters were Soros funded.”
He also stated that, “I’m glad to see someone out there asking people to think for themselves and use some logic and reason rather than spout what the media, otherwise known as the communications branch of the Democratic Party is selling.”
The article starts out, “The conflagration in Charlottesville is beginning to feel like a set-up, perhaps weeks or months in the planning…We know that Obama and his inner circle have set up a war room in his D.C. home to plan and execute resistance to the Trump administration and his legislative agenda.”
When he was contacted by the Idaho Statesman for an interview about the article he posted, Zollinger says that he probably shouldn’t have posted it.
“In hindsight, maybe it was a mistake to post it,” Zollinger stated. “I didn’t mean for it to ruffle any feathers.”
However, he reiterated that the claims were “plausible.”
