On Sunday, Melania expressed her disapproval of the policy that separates families who cross the border illegally. She said through her spokeswoman that she “hates” seeing families separated.

According to a statement by Stephanie Grisham, Melania’s communications director, “Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform.”

The statement added, “She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart.”

Melania’s statement through her spokeswoman comes as Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced their “zero tolerance policy” for illegal border crossings in April. The policy stated that as a result of illegal crossings, families would be separated.

Department of Homeland Security spokesman Jonathan Hoffman revealed on Friday that there are nearly 2,000 children who have been taken from their parents and put into holding cells. This took place between April 19 and May 31.

The new policy has caused public outcry from Democrats and immigration advocates, who describe the practice “cruel and traumatizing” for the children.

Just this week, The American Academy of Pediatrics and medical experts have also spoken out. They warned that separating children from their parents will cause “irreplaceable harm” to the children.

Even some Republicans have expressed their disapproval of the new policy. However, the White House has indicated that it will not end the practice.
