On Tuesday, CNN projected Democrat Phil Murphy’s victory for the governor’s race in New Jersey.

This victory means that there will be a shift in control after eight years of the Republican Gov. Chris Christie. It also means that Sen. Bob Menendez should leave office next year and would be replaced by a Democrat.

Menendez is currently facing corruption charges and deliberations with the jury have started. If he is found guilty, he will likely face an immense amount of pressure to step down.

If Menendez resigns, that means that Murphy could appoint a successor and help shift the rule from Republican to Democratic.

Over the past few years, Christie has seen his popularity drop. Christie’s Quinnipiac University polls over the past few months, showed that his approval rating has been in the mid to low teens.

Murphy will be the first Democrat in the governor’s office since Jon Corzine who won the seat in 2005 but lost reelection in 2009 to Christie.

Murphy vowed to shift New Jersey in a progressive direction. He promises to legalize and tax marijuana, raise the minimum wage to $15, tighten gun-control laws and much more.

He also promised to fight Trump’s policies and stated that he would consider making New Jersey, a “sanctuary state” to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation.
