On Monday night, Tucker Carlson, Fox News host, went head to head with Bill Nye over the topic of climate change.
Nye explained why people deny the evidence of climate change and in the end, he said, “Climate change denial is denial.”
Nye continued, “The evidence for climate change is overwhelming.” “So we’re looking for an explanation for why you guys are having so much trouble with this.”
“I think most people are open to the idea of climate change,” Carlson stated. In which Nye interrupted and said that it is the rate is that is concerning. “The core question, from what I can determine, is why the change?”
Carlson had asked about the “degree” to which climate change can be linked to human activity, with Nye backed the fact saying that it was a settled question that human activity is causing climate change.
When Carlson asked again to what “degree” and Nye replied “to a degree that is a serious problem in the next few decades.”
Carlson attempted to get an actual “degree,” in which climate change is caused by human activity, Nye explained,“So the word ‘degree’ is a word that you chose.” “But the speed that climate change is happening is caused by humans. Instead of happening on time scales of millions of years, or let’s say, 15,000 years, it’s happening on a time scale of decades. And now years.”
Then Carlson interrupted and asked to what extent is human activity responsible for speeding up climate change, in which Nye replied, “100%, if that’s the number you want.”
Carlson continued interrupting Nye before he could answer any of the questions that were being asked. Nye was finally able to answer Carlson’s questions about what would the climate look like right now without human activity, in which Nye replied “like it was in 1750, “Britain will not be well suited to growing grapes as it is today, French winemakers will not be buying land to the north..”
Carlson interrupted again before he could finish his answer, which Nye held up his cell phone and said, “This is how long it takes you to interrupt me. It takes you quite a bit less than six seconds.”
Nye finally finished answering the question and Carlson went off on Nye saying “You’re using the science of politics.” “You’re not a scientist, as you know, you’re a popularizer.”
“So much of this you don’t know. You pretend that you know, but you don’t know, and you bully people who ask question … I’m open-minded, you are not,” an upset Carlson finished the interview.
