On Monday, during his latest concert in New York City, Billy Joel made a major statement against hate.

He wore a suit jacket that had two Stars of David, one was placed on his front left breast and another on his back. He donned the stars during his sold out encore show at the Madison Square Garden.

The star patch he wore is similar to the ones that Nazis forced Jewish people to wear during the Holocaust to identify them. Joel’s parents are Jewish. However, Joel considers himself to be an atheist. But to him, he identifies with the issue of persecution as personal. In 1938, his 68-year-old grandfather was forced to flee Nazi Germany. Joel also had other family members who died in the Holocaust.

This move comes after the violence in Charlottesville, VA, last weekend and seemed to be a rebuke for how Trump responded to the violence.

Both of his ex-wives took the time to praise him for what he did.

Katie Lee, one of his ex-wives wrote:

“Truly in awe of my former husband @billyjoel wearing the yellow Star of David at his concert at MSG last night,” she wrote on Instagram. “He is an incredible man and what a way to take a stand. He continues to inspire me and I hope he does to each and every one of you.”

Christie Brinkley, his other ex-wife took to Instagram to applaud him as well:

Joel’s daughter also posted about it on Instagram saying:

During the show, he also took swipes at the Trump administration while singing “Goodbye to You” with Patty Smyth, as pictures of the fired staffers appeared on the screen.
