On Monday, after one of the fathers saw that his son participated in the rally in Charlottesville, Virginia on national news, he decided to disown his son.

The father Pearce Tefft wrote a letter on North Dakota’s Inforum. In the letter, he started out by talking about how he and his family does not know where his son picked up his racist beliefs.

“I, along with all of his siblings and his entire family, wish to loudly repudiate my son’s vile, hateful, and racist rhetoric and actions. We do not know specifically where he learned these beliefs.” the father wrote. He also clarified that the son didn’t learn the values from his parents, writing, “He did not learn them at home.”

He continued, “I have shared my home and hearth with friends and acquaintances of every race, gender, and creed. I have taught all of my children that all men and women are created equal. That we must love each other all the same.” However, in the letter, he acknowledged that his son chose a different way to live his life.

He writes that his family has remained silent, but he believes that’s a mistake to do so.

He wrote,“It was the silence of good people that allowed the Nazis to flourish the first time around, and it is the silence of good people that is allowing them to flourish now.”

He goes on and says that his son is no longer welcome in their home or at family gatherings and prays that his son will renounce the hateful beliefs. He also says that his son’s hateful beliefs are bringing hateful rhetoric to other family members.

In the letter, he brought up the time when his son joked about being a fascist.  The father recalled him saying, “The thing about us fascists is, it’s not that we don’t believe in freedom of speech. You can say whatever you want. We’ll just throw you in an oven.”

The father concluded his letter by saying, “Peter, you will have to shovel our bodies into the oven, too. Please, son, renounce the hate, accept and love all.”

His father is not the only one to speak out about this. His nephew denounced him as well on local station WDAY TV.

According to the statement by his nephew Jacob Scott who wrote, “In brief, we reject him wholly – both him personally as a vile person who has HIMSELF made violent threats against our family, and also his hideous ideology, which we abhor. We are all bleeding-heart liberals who believe in the fundamental equality of all human beings. Peter is a maniac, who has turned away from all of us and gone down some insane internet rabbit-hole and turned into a crazy nazi. He scares us all, we don’t feel safe around him, and we don’t know how he came to be this way. My grandfather feels especially grieved, as though he has failed as a father.”
