On Thursday morning, McDonald’s tweeted:
The tweet was online for about 20 minutes and was pinned to the top before it was deleted.
About an hour later, McDonald’s tweeted saying that their account has been “compromised.”
Twitter notified us that our account was compromised. We deleted the tweet, secured our account and are now investigating this.

According to Kellan Terry, a senior data analyst for BrandWatch revealed McDonald’s Twitter mentions spiked 150% after the tweet and that most mentions were positive.
Some have speculated that the incident may have stemmed from Robert Gibbs, McDonald’s global chief communications officer, who was former press secretary to President Obama. There is no evidence of that of Gibbs having anything to do with it.
